The short version
Flexibility is how far a joint or muscle can be moved, usually by something other than you: gravity, a partner, a strap, or your other hand.
Mobility is how far you can move that joint yourself, under your own control, and still be able to do something useful when you get there.
You can have plenty of the first and very little of the second. That combination is more common than people expect, and it is usually what is behind the frustrating experience of stretching diligently for months while nothing in daily movement feels different.
Why the distinction matters
Imagine two people. Both can have their leg lifted to the same height by a partner. Only one of them can lift it there and hold it without help.
Only one of those two ranges shows up in a kick, a lunge, a stair, or a stumble you have to recover from. Your body will not let you use range it cannot control, and it is quite good at protecting you from range it does not trust.
That is not a flaw. It is a sensible safety system. It also means the fix for "I stretch and nothing changes" is often not more stretching, it is learning to produce force in the range you already own.
How to tell which one you are short on
A simple, honest self-test for any joint:
1. Move the joint as far as you can on your own, with no help. Note where it stops. 2. Now let something else take you further: your hand, a wall, gravity, a partner. 3. Compare.
If step 2 goes noticeably further than step 1, you have passive range you cannot yet use. That gap is where mobility work lives. If both stop in the same place and the end feels like a hard block rather than a stretch, you are dealing with actual tissue length or joint structure, and stretching plus time is more likely to be the answer.
Neither result is a diagnosis. If the end range hurts rather than feels tight, that is worth a conversation with a qualified professional.
What actually closes the gap
Three things, in rough order of importance:
Producing force at end range. Getting into a position and then pushing, holding, or resisting there teaches your nervous system that the position is usable. This is the whole idea behind loaded mobility work.
Repetition at low intensity. Range responds better to short, frequent exposure than to occasional heroic sessions. Five minutes most days beats forty minutes on a Sunday.
Control on the way back. How you exit a position matters as much as how you enter it. Slow, controlled returns are where a lot of the useful adaptation happens.
Where a resistance tool fits
A tool that adds resistance inside a position, rather than pulling you into one, biases everything toward mobility rather than flexibility. That is the case with an oscillating bar: you get to a position, start the bar moving, and then your job is to stay organised while it keeps asking small questions.
The feedback is the useful part. When your control runs out, the bar tells you immediately, which is much clearer than the vague "that felt tight" you get from a static hold.
What this does not mean
It does not mean stretching is useless. Passive range is the ceiling that active range works underneath, and there are plenty of good reasons to spend time on it, including simply enjoying it.
It also does not mean more range is always better. Beyond a point, extra passive range without matching control is not obviously useful, and for some people it is a liability. The goal is usable range for the things you actually do, not the biggest number.
Putting it together
If you want a simple rule: stretch for the range, load it to keep it. Spend a little time opening a position, then spend time working inside it so the range sticks around.
Most people who feel stuck have skipped the second half.
Common questions
Can I be too flexible?
Extra passive range without matching control is not automatically useful, and some people are more comfortable when they build control before chasing more range. It is worth discussing with a professional if end range feels unstable.
How long does mobility take to change?
Most people notice a difference in how a position feels within a few weeks of consistent short sessions. Lasting change comes from making it routine, not from any single session.
