Two kinds of range
Passive mobility is range created by an outside force: your hands, a strap, gravity, a partner, a wall. Your muscles are largely along for the ride.
Active mobility is range you produce with your own muscles, with nothing helping you get there.
Almost everyone has more of the first than the second. The difference between them has a name in some coaching circles, the "active insufficiency gap", but the label matters less than the idea: there is range you can be put into and range you can get to, and only the second one shows up when you need it.
A two-minute self-test
Try this on the shoulder, since it is the easiest to feel.
Lie on your back. Keeping your ribs flat, raise both arms overhead and try to touch the floor behind you without arching. Note where they stop. That is roughly your active overhead range.
Now let a wall or a partner take your arms a little further, gently. Most people find several more inches available.
Repeat the same idea at the hip: lift your leg as high as you can lying on your back, then have something lift it further.
The difference is not a problem to be alarmed about. It is just information about where your training should point.
Why the gap exists
Your nervous system controls how much range it will let you produce, and it does that partly based on how much control you have demonstrated there. Range you never load, never hold, and never produce force in is range the system has no reason to trust.
There are also mechanical reasons. Producing force at long muscle lengths is genuinely harder, and if you never practise it, it stays hard.
How to train each one
To train passive range: longer holds, relaxed breathing, low intensity, patience. Static stretching lives here. It is best done when you are warm and not immediately before something explosive.
To train active range: get to a position under your own power, then do something there. Hold it. Press into it. Resist a small perturbation. Move slowly in and out of it. Short holds, repeated, beat one long one.
A practical structure that works for most people:
- 1 to 2 minutes opening the position passively
- 3 to 5 minutes producing force inside it
- Finish by moving the joint through its full range under control a few times
Where oscillating resistance fits
Oscillation is a convenient way to add the "do something there" part. You reach a position, start the bar shaking, and then your only job is to stay organised while it keeps moving.
Two things make that useful. First, the load is small, so you can do it at end range without the risk that comes with heavy weight in a long position. Second, it is honest. The moment your control fades, the bar starts moving you instead of the other way around, and you can feel it happening.
Common mistakes
Testing active range when cold and concluding you are stiff. Test after a short warm-up for a fairer picture.
Chasing more passive range when the gap is the problem. If passive already exceeds active by a lot, more stretching widens the gap rather than closing it.
Holding your breath. If a position requires breath-holding to maintain, back off. Breathing normally is part of the standard.

Passive range is the ceiling. Active range is the part of the ceiling you can reach. Most people benefit more from raising the second than the first.
